How Does Self-Adhered Roofing Underlayment Work?

Self-Adhered Roofing Underlayment

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A roof is a home’s first line of defense against the elements. With the storms we experience in South Florida, the underlayment is the most vital part of a solid roof. With self-adhered underlayment, waterproofing a roof is more efficient than ever

Traditional Underlayment

Traditional underlayment is layers of an organic felt mat that has been saturated in asphalt, commonly referred to as #30lb/#90lb hot mop. This got the job done.  The downside is the material are organic and are adversely affected by heat & moisture.  Additionally, the installation is only as good as the person handling the mop.

During storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes, it isn’t unusual to have the covering of tile, shingles, or metal blow off without covering to protect it, the organic underlayment will tear allowing water into your home.

The Self-Adhered Advantage

Self-adhered underlayment has its own adhesive applied from the factory so the asphalt is uniform throughout the application. Installation is as simple as measuring, cutting, and sticking. If you’re struggling to visualize it, imagine covering a piece of wood with a roll of sticky tape. You roll it out on your roof, cut it to length, and remove the protective backing while firmly sticking the sticky tape down. Self-adhering underlayment works in the same way, except on a larger scale. Just like sticky tape, self-adhesive underlayment can be overlapped to ensure there are no spaces for water to seep through, and since the top half of the underlayment is nailed to the roof deck, it is completely removable IF you need to reroof.

Self-adhered underlayment consists of two distinct layers. The bottom layer is 55-mil adhesive, which guarantees that once the underlayment is set, it won’t lift or tear if your coverings are blown away by the wind. The second layer is a 60-mil waterproofing layer. The combination of these two layers creates an underlayment of 115 mils that protects the roof without failing for a longer period.

Since there is no need for hot tar kettle, your family, neighbors, as well as the roofers aren’t exposed to the dangerous fumes, heat and gas the kettles produce. With no torches there is no risk of burning, setting something on fire, hot tar damaging property, which leads to a safer site.

A roof is only as good as the materials used to create it, Tag & Stick self-adhering underlayment will allow you to complete projects sooner, and with our mechanically attached base sheet, our underlayment will withstand all the elements that can be thrown at it.
